ANIMAL, BIRD AND CAR ANAGRAM LIST

© Celtica Mapping 2011 - 2020

One way to use the single letters of the Type B marker sets is to print “all controls” maps (as you would for a score competition).  All the controls are shown on the map with numbers beside each circle but no joining lines.

Initially you can pre-prepare maps with the controls to be visited linked by lines as in any normal orienteering course. Youngsters follow this course collecting a single letter at each control.  On completing the course they rearrange the letters to fit the clue which can be written on the map, for example “A flower”.  As some words are fairly obscure it will be necessary to give a list of possible answers on the board.

A more challenging version is to give each youngster or pair an “all controls” map and a short list of control numbers (in ascending numerical order) to visit in any order, for example 3,8,11,13,24.   They first identify the controls on the map. If the maps are laminated they can circle them in permanent felt tip pen (which can be cleaned off later with methylated spirit) and then draw lines between then to create the most efficient course that visits all the specified points.

When they get to each control they note down the letter and having collected all the letters return to the start.  They then have to arrange the letters they have collected to form a word that fits the clue they have been given – for example plants, wild animals or water creatures.

This activity is good for literacy as well as developing orienteering skills.  It is also easily differentiated as more able or older youngsters can be given longer words and so have both longer courses and more difficult anagrams

Checking answers is easy as right answers will be a word fitting the clue; there is no need to see if each control letter is right unless they cannot get an anagram from the letters they have collected

Words are listed by length as if they collect say 5 letters the answer will have be a five letter word so much reducing the potential range of words they need to consider.
